Narrative: Accomplished Gardeners’ Program Impact Statement:  Of the “Accomplished Gardener” returning evaluations, 90% said the educational sessions were good or excellent. Because of attending the meeting series, 85% of respondents said they would improve their pest management and would be reducing pesticide use; 70% said they would improve their soil nutrient management for their gardens. Finally, 100% said they planned to implement a new gardening practice in the growing year because of this program.

44 individuals were trained on proper pruning of small and tree fruit trees, vines or bushes at 5workshops.  Milford (12) Merrimack (10) Amherst (7), Hollis (8), Peterborough (15).  Follow-up conversation with 10 individuals that participated indicated that the demonstrations help them in pruning their own fruit trees and bushes.

Narrative:

When you support volunteer Master Gardener education programs, participants will increase their knowledge of home horticulture and UNHCE resources, and learn how to apply that knowledge and UNHCE resources. As a result, participants will be able to accurately answer consumer calls and requests for information, and teach others about home horticulture and how to make changes to their surroundings that optimize the safe use of their properties while protecting the environment. This will benefit the community by expanding the impact of UNHCE’s programs, free up Extension Educators’ time, and increase the ability of NH’s citizens to enjoy the benefits of home horticulture and sustain the economic, aesthetic and environmental benefits of NH agriculture.

Impacts:What happened to the audience/community as a result of the program described? Increased knowledge/awareness and improved home horticulural practices; Increased knowledge of home horticulture, so FHGC volunteers can accurately and reliably answer consumer questions from the info line; increased Extension Educator teaching time; maintained the economic, aesthetic and environmental benefits of NH agriculture.

What knowledge was gained? Participants learned Botany, Soils and Fertilizers, Insects and Diseases, Pesticide Use and Safety, Plant Propagation, Home Vegetable Gardening, Composting ,Tree Fruits and Berries ,Tree and Shrub Culture, Flower Gardening, Lawn Care, Houseplants, Organic Cultural Practices, Backyard Livestock, Food Preservation, Food Safety, Backyard Wildlife, Water quality, Invasives, Urban pest problems, An overview of family and youth development programs

What skills were increased? Pruning techniques, Diagnosing Plant Problems, Diagnosing sick trees and shrubs, Answering consumer calls and problem solving skills.

What practices/behavior changed? How many people changed? Two- 135+ hour Master Gardener training programs were conducted reaching 75 participants. In addition, 34 Master Gardeners attended 2- 2day refresher workshops that covered updates on computers, plant disease and pest diagnosis, and home horticultural updates. The FHGEC has 170 MG volunteers who volunteered for 3008 hours and answered 6159 phone calls and emails (1191). 49 participants were trained in the Ask A Master Gardener program.  The program connected MG with 17 local garden centers/nurseries where MG answered consumer questions on gardening.  An estimated 2425 people were reached through the program.  The program also promoted the Family, Home and Garden Education Center.  In NH, there are 566 Master Gardener volunteers who volunteered 8022 hours at the FHGEC or in county based educational programs or events.

So What? Who Cares? New Hampshire's population now exceeds 1,288,000. Each year UNHCE receives thousands of requests from New Hampshire citizens for education and information on a wide range of topics including home gardening, wildlife, household pests, food preparation and food safety, trees and shrubs and many other topics. To meet this need, the Family, Home and Garden education center was opened to provide a toll-free information line for consumers and homeowners to call for practical solutions to their everyday questions. The Master Gardener volunteers represent UNH Cooperative Extension and require extensive training to give accurate, research-based information when answering consumer calls.

Amy Ouellette

Narrative: A small group of Belknap County Master Gardener volunteers and myself worked with other collaborators to help refugees from Turkmenistan start a large vegetable garden on State property in Laconia. We held a plant sale in June to raise "seed" money for this effort. We contributed $500 to the refugee project and met with collaborators and refugees to discuss challenges (irrigation, fencing for wildlife control, pest management in the Winnipesaukee watershed) and regulations (pesticide licensing). The garden has yielded hundreds of pounds of fresh vegetables for consumption by these refugee families.
